It's a series of unfortunate events for Dylan van Baarle. The Dutch rider from Visma | Lease a Bike missed much of the spring season and was kept out of the Tour de France due to injuries. In the second stage of the Vuelta a España, bad luck struck again: Van Baarle hit the pavement, tried to continue, but ultimately had to give up. With ninety kilometers to go, there was an awkward crash. Rainer Kepplinger (Bahrain-Victorious) seemed to get a bag from his own support team caught in his handlebars in a feed zone. This incident had bigger consequences than expected, as it caused a chain reaction that led to Van Baarle crashing on the other side of the peloton. The Dutchman sat on the ground for a while with a grimace on his face but eventually got back on his bike. However, he did visit the medical car. Despite the low speed, he appeared to be in considerable pain.
As mentioned, Van Baarle continued for a while, but eventually, his injuries were too much, leading to an early abandonment. A tough blow for Visma | Lease a Bike...
