Remco Evenepoel's imposing solo victory
was undoubtedly the climax of the Olympic road race, but plenty of funny things happened in the background. German rider Nils Politt went on a pee break in an exceptional place, Atilla Valter cheered as he crossed the finish line, and the flamboyant Groupama-FDJ team boss Marc Madiot also demanded quite a bit of attention. Let's start with the latter. We are used to Madiot being very passionate about his riders. In the past, for example, he went completely crazy when his former rider Thibaut Pinot won a Tour stage on the Tourmalet. On Saturday, Madiot had another opportunity to freak out. After all, his Valentin Madouas took silver in the road race behind the unstoppable Evenepoel. In a video, a lyrical Madiot can be seen verbally and non-verbally sharing his joy with whoever wants to hear it from the press stand.

Politt takes a pee in a Paris cafe
Nils Politt had a leading role in the race for a long time. The German was part of the breakaway, which Evenepoel would eventually join. Like the rest of the pack, Politt tried to follow Evenepoel but soon had to drop back, following which the chance for a medal was gone. Then he thought: a good time for a pee break. He chose the famous Café des 2 Moulins as his location. Because of the enthusiastic spectators that were there, it became a pee break for Politt to remember.

Did Valter know that he did not win a medal?
Then there is Atilla Valter. The Hungarian rode an impressive road race and finished fourth, first to come in behind the Olympic medalists. You would think he would be pretty bummed, but as it turned out, nothing could be further from the truth. He crossed the finish line cheering. It is unclear if he thought he had won or if he was cheering for his teammate Christophe Laporte's third-place finish. Both riders are under contract with Visma | Lease a Bike.

Evenepoel tears up on podium
And to finish, there is such a thing as
happy tears. Remco Evenepoel won and although he was extremely happy for most of the race, it hit him on the podium that he was heading for Belgium with a gold medal in both the time trial and the road race. That produced beautiful images, flanked by Frenchmen Valentin Madouas and Christophe Laporte.
