A heartfelt story has emerged from the development team of DSM-Firmenich PostNL. Benjamin Peatfield, a 21-year-old rider, announced via Instagram that his contract with the Dutch team has been mutually terminated. A concussion sustained after a crash in the Tour de l'Oise earlier this year has had long-lasting and significant consequences. Born in Bolton, Peatfield began his career in 2021 with the junior team of AG2R Citroën, later moving to Vendée U in 2022. After two years with the French squad, he secured a spot with the DSM-Firmenich PostNL development team for 2024. He made his debut for the team at Milano-Torino in March, followed by appearances in several 1.Pro races during the spring. However, in late May, a crash during the second stage of the Ronde de l'Oise left him with a concussion, forcing him to withdraw from the race.
The head injury turned out to have serious repercussions. Reflecting on the challenges he has faced, Peatfield opened up about his struggles on social media. "Many injuries over the years have made it very difficult to perform at my best. I’ve always tried to push those thoughts aside, but mentally and physically, they’ve always been a factor. The biggest setback was the concussion in May, which I’m still dealing with to this day," the Englishman writes.

"This is not a goodbye, but a new chapter," Peatfield says
Just as a concussion sidelined Taco van der Hoorn for an extended period, Benjamin Peatfield is no stranger to the challenges posed by this difficult injury. “It’s not just physically demanding but mentally as well. The headaches, fatigue, concentration issues, vision problems… they turned everyday life into a struggle,” he shared. The young rider endured a tough mental battle but received significant support from his team. “I want to thank the team and staff for the support they’ve given me throughout the year,” he said gratefully.
However, Peatfield is not entirely giving up on his cycling dreams. “I still believe I have what it takes to reach the top level of the sport, should I choose to pursue it again later. The dream hasn’t disappeared, but I’ve taken a different path for now. I’m stepping back to focus on my recovery and to rediscover my love for cycling. This is not goodbye, but a new chapter,” the 21-year-old stated courageously.
