38-year-old Andrey Amador has announced his retirement from cycling. Although he was still under contract with EF Education-EasyPost until the end of 2025, a collision with a truck forced him to make this difficult decision. Amador stated via a video message on social media that he was unable to recover from the incident fully.
"It was a career full of challenges and satisfaction. I'm here to announce that I'm retiring from professional cycling," he said in the video. "It was not an easy decision. It wasn't planned, but in life and cycling, there are times when you have to listen to your body and where taking care of your health should be the priority."

Amador is referring to his terrible accident in May of this year. While training in La Garriga, the Costa Rican was hit by a truck, leaving him severely injured. He slipped on some gravel, and his bike and foot slid under a truck, his team EF Education-EasyPost reported. In other words, he had his guardian angel on his shoulder. The seasoned domestique broke his ankle and foot and underwent immediate surgery for these injuries. And while that all went well, it now appears that returning physically, mentally, or for some other reason is sadly no longer possible.

Amador is not saying goodbye to cycling. "Although I am saying goodbye to professional cycling, I will always remain connected to this sport I love. I cherish the beautiful memories and the satisfaction of always performing at my best on the bike. Now, there will be moments of rest and time to take care of my health. Thank you all, and see you always," he concluded the video. Amador was a pro from 2009 to 2024.
