It’s tragically common for cyclists to be hit by vehicles, and Andrey Amador of EF Education-EasyPost is the latest to face such peril. The seasoned Costa Rican cyclist is - given the condition of his bike - fortunate to be alive and out of life-threatening danger after an alarming accident. Amador was struck by a truck during a training session in La Garriga on Friday, resulting in severe injuries. He slipped on some gravel, and his bike and foot slid under a truck, his team EF Education-EasyPost reported. In other words: he had his guardian angel on his shoulder.
The seasoned domestique broke his ankle and foot and underwent immediate surgery for these injuries, and considering the circumstances, it could have been much worse.
Photos of the bicycle Amador was riding, which is barely recognizable now, are circulating on social media. The frame, handlebars, wheels: everything is shattered into pieces of the Cannondale.
The exact details of how the accident occurred are still unclear, but what is certain is that the 37-year-old rider from Costa Rica has not had an easy season. He recently fell in the Tour of Romandie and had been affected by another crash earlier, limiting his racing days in 2024. He also missed the Giro d'Italia, where he was originally scheduled to compete.
We won't see Amador on the bike for some time due to his leg fracture, which will keep him off the road for a while. However, he is likely very grateful to be able to still tell the tale about the accident now, which might lead to questions about whether it's all still worth it, especially for professionals of his age. Amador's current contract with EF Education-EasyPost runs until 2025.
