Anthony Turgis wins 'holy grail' with gravel ride: 'Was also in that big fall in Dwars door Vlaanderen'

Anthony Turgis recorded the biggest win of his career Sunday and already the third French victory in this edition of the Tour de France. The French rouleur from TotalEnergies won the infamous gravel stage from the breakaway. He beat the likes of Tom Pidcock and Derek Geen in the sprint. 'This is great, and that on my seventh participation,' Turgis jubilated in the flash interview.

Prior to the Tour, Turgis shared in the interview, his confidence was somewhat lacking. 'I didn't even dare raise my hand beforehand when asked who among us could win a stage, but this is the holy grail. This is really a fantastic experience,' Turgis is experiencing the moment of his career.

The final stage was very exciting. With Stuyven we had a tough nut to crack, but at the finish I looked left, right and again... Then you think: I'm in the lead in Tour. All sorts of things go through your head, and then you win. An incredible feeling!", Turgis beautifully describes the rollercoaster of emotions he underwent.

Turgis: 'We're going to take a lot of champagne now'

The victory comes at a good time for Turgis, coming off a difficult spring in which he was involved in the same heavy crash as Wout van Aert. 'This is a prestigious victory. Earlier this year I was unlucky, because I was also in that big crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen. But this is so good. We are going to take a lot of champagne now, because we have rest day tomorrow,' he concludes laughing.
