Niklas Behrens has successfully undergone surgery following his crash in the UAE Tour. The German rider from Visma | Lease a Bike crashed hard onto a median strip during the final stage of the race in the Middle East, breaking his collarbone. However, just a few days after his fall, he’s already able to smile about it on social media.
Behrens had already completed his lead-out duties in the UAE Tour and only needed to finish the final stage to Jebel Hafeet safely. However, in that last stage, he was involved in a nasty crash along with several other riders. At high speed, they collided with a median strip, resulting in multiple broken collarbones. Besides Behrens, both Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor) and Chris Froome (Israel-Premier Tech) also suffered similar injuries.
It’s a tough blow for Visma | Lease a Bike, but especially for Behrens himself. Surgery was necessary to ensure the German powerhouse, who had made a stunning impression in his debut race in Oman, would heal in the best possible way. As a result, he went under the knife on Wednesday. After the procedure, Behrens shared a photo on social media. “My surgery went well, and for that, I have to thank Visma | Lease a Bike. In triathlon, they would say: now you’re an Iron Man,” he joked, referencing his former sport.
Only two riders from Visma | Lease a Bike managed to finish the UAE Tour. Olav Kooij, Julien Vermote, and Tom Gloag fell ill, while Dan McLay did not complete the final stage.
