The cycling world seemed to have bid farewell to Mark Cavendish after he claimed a record-breaking 35th Tour stage win this past summer. However, the 39-year-old Brit from Astana Qazaqstan has since been unclear about whether we’ll truly not see him in 2025, or if he might just return... His appearance at the Tour de France route presentation on Tuesday didn’t provide much clarity.
Cavendish took the stage but was reluctant to reveal much about his future after the presentation. "Like everyone who’s ridden the Tour de France, you always finish thinking: I’ll never do that again. But after a few days, you start to miss it and want to gear up for the buzz again," Cav told reporters, including Cyclingnews.
Will we see him back in Astana Qazaqstan’s light blue at the Tour? The sprint star will certainly have a role within Alexandre Vinokourov’s team, but whether that will be as a rider... "We’ll see," he said with a laugh. Cavendish will at least still participate in ASO criteriums this year in Saitama, Japan and Singapore, which may also serve as his grand farewell.

"Life is great. I ride my bike, spend time with my kids, and haven’t thought about racing," said Cav about his past few months. "I’ve been traveling and busy. I just got back from a holiday with the kids, which was the first time in a long time. That was really, really nice."
At Astana Qazaqstan, they would likely welcome another year with Cavendish. The Kazakh team is urgently seeking UCI points to retain its WorldTour license for the 2026-2028 period. To this end, new Chinese sponsor XDS has brought many riders on board. Among others, Wout Poels, Sergio Higuita, Alberto Bettiol, Mike Teunissen, Diego Ulissi and Clément Champoussin have all signed with the team. Observant fans will notice 29 riders on the roster for 2025, leaving one slot still open...
