Cycling fans around the world are gearing up for the first races of 2025. In just over three weeks, the Tour Down Under will kick off. For Jayco AlUla, this home race is always a significant event, but surprisingly, one of their biggest Australian stars, Caleb Ewan, has been left out of the lineup. Shortly after, Ewan’s profile also vanished from the team’s website.

In a press release, Jayco AlUla announced the riders that are set to compete in Adelaide. "Luke Plapp comes back after his crash in this year in January at the Tour Down Under, and he’ll be leading the team," said team director Mathew Hayman. "We also have Mauro Schmid coming out to Australia as well, he’s done well on the GC in the past. Campbell Stewart will be an option for the bunch sprints but it’s quite a demanding course this year." The roster also includes Luke Durbridge, Chris Harper, Michael Hepburn, and Kelland O’Brien.

The choice of Stewart as the team’s sprinter is notable, particularly given the absence of Caleb Ewan. The 30-year-old Australian is a prolific winner, with nine victories in his home race to date. However, the past few years have been challenging for the 'Pocket Rocket.' In 2024, he managed only three wins and struggled to perform at the highest level. As a result, he wasn’t selected for the Vuelta a España.

Ewan’s profile was still listed on Jayco AlUla’s website at the start of January, but by the second week of 2025, it mysteriously disappeared — even though he has a valid contract with the team. To be continued, no doubt...

Plapp on riding Tour Down Under as national champion: "No greater honor"

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Ewan, Jayco AlUla is targeting general classification success in the Tour Down Under with Luke Plapp, who hopes to shine once again in his national champion’s jersey. "Last year was a dream start to the season when I won the national championship and was able to represent the national colors in the Tour Down Under. There’s no greater honor as a rider. I hope to defend my national title in Perth the week before — it would be the perfect preparation," said Plapp.
