The final round of the Champions League in track cycling, held in London, ended abruptly after a serious crash during the keirin event. Two riders and at least four spectators were injured in the incident. The collision occurred when Britain's Katy Marchant and Germany's Alessa-Catriona Pröpster pushed each other toward the top of the track at high speed. In the process, both riders flew over the glass boarding and landed in the crowd.

Race officials showed no further footage of the horrific crash. Later, it was decided that the rest of the program should be canceled. "We are working closely with all parties to review the incident before taking appropriate action," British Cycling told the BBC.

According to a statement from the International Cycling Union UCI, riders and injured spectators received medical treatment at the scene. Katy Marchant, the 31-year-old British rider and reigning Olympic champion in the team sprint, suffered a broken arm. According to initial reports, the condition of the other injured people does not appear to be too bad.

A similar incident occurred at the Lee Valley VeloPark in London during the 2022 Commonwealth Games. English cyclist Matt Walls was launched over barriers into the crowd with his bicycle. Safety measures were taken in response, including installing a 1.4-meter-high barrier around the track. The cost of that was £250,000. But that, it now appears, is sadly not sufficient either.
