Harrie Lavreysen will face Matthew Richardson again in this year's Track Champions League for the first time since the Olympics. The Australian by origin changed his nationality to British after the Olympic Games and thus could not compete at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
This year's Track Champions League is divided into five rounds over three weekends. It begins on November 23 in St-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France, where Lavreysen won his Olympic triple (sprint, team sprint, and keirin) this season. One week later, two evenings are scheduled for the first time in the Netherlands, namely at the Apeldoorn cycling track. Then, they will conclude the tournament in London on December 6 and 7.
The organization of the Track Champions League - a collaboration between Warner Bros Discovery and the UCI - announced the participants' names this week. In the Endurance and Sprint categories, eighteen male and eighteen female participants compete. Among them are Dutchmen Roy Eefting-Bloem (Endurance), Steffie van der Peet, Hetty van der Wouw, Jeffrey Hoogland, and Lavreysen (Sprint). Competing on behalf of Belgium are Lyndsay De Vylder (Endurance) and Nicky Degrendele (Sprint).
Lavreysen, as a three-time Olympic champion, will again start as a top favorite at the tournament, which, therefore, visits the Netherlands for the first time. "A new win in the UCI Track Champions League would be great. I've had a wonderful year with my Olympic and world titles, and this will complete the season. The speed between races suits me well, and I envision a fantastic new season." This means he will have to get past Richardson again, who, as a major rival, now competes for British Cycling.
