Major blow for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe and the race as a whole: Roglic withdraws from Tour de France

Primoz Roglic will not start in stage 13 of the Tour de France. On Thursday, the Slovenian leader of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe suffered a severe crash at the end of stage twelve. He is experiencing so much discomfort from the fall that he has to leave the Tour.

In the crash during the twelfth stage, Roglic was one of the hardest-hit victims. The Slovenian received assistance from a train of teammates in order to help him return, but it proved to be an impossible task. Ultimately, he lost 2 minutes and 27 seconds and finished with a resigned expression on his face. It seemed clear then: Roglic was too injured to make anything of the Tour.

"Primoz underwent careful examination by our medical team after yesterday's stage and again this morning. The decision has been taken that he will not start today, to focus on upcoming goals," stated the German team.

Roglic actually seemed to be improving a bit in the last few stages

In the 2024 Tour, Roglic got off to a somewhat difficult start, losing time on the San Luca and on the Galibier. In the end, however, he seemed to be getting better and better, including in the mountains. In the gravel stage he was in a good position and in the stage to Le Lioran he was - until the fall on the descent - nicely in the lead with the other Big Four riders, Remco Evenepoel, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. Until fate struck once again.

Just like back in 2021 and 2022, a fall (in)directly brings an end to Roglic's Tour. In 2021, he fell early and rode on injured for five more days. In 2022, he crashed in the cobbled stage, following which he continued at top level for several more days and even helped Jonas Vingegaard in the hunt for yellow. Even then, however, Roglic had to drop out. Such bad luck for the popular Slovenian.

Another dropout at Cofidis: Herrada has to give up due to illness

Cofidis is also facing more misfortune, as the French team's Jesus Herrada has to leave the race. The Spaniard is ill, according to his team. Earlier, Cofidis already lost Alexis Renard and Ion Izagirre, who did not make it to the end of stage 11.
