Meeus outsmarts competition and wins on the Champs-Élysées: "For days now, I had the feeling that I could do more"

Jordi Meeus has won the final stage of the Tour de France. The swift Belgian, riding for BORA-hansgrohe, defeated Jasper Philipsen on the Champs-Élysées, securing the most significant victory of his career. Prior to this stage, his best result in a Tour de France stage was sixth place. "For days now, I had the feeling that I could do more here," a content Meeus said in the flash interview.

The swift sprinter indicates that his legs have been great for weeks now. "I knew there was more potential than the results I had achieved so far. On Sunday, everything went perfectly, and I am super happy to have won the stage. I felt really good today, from the moment we went full throttle, I had good legs, and Marco Haller positioned me perfectly. Danny (van Poppel, ed.) was also in a great spot."

In the final straight line, however, Meeus chose the wheel of the top sprinters. "I chose Mads Pedersen's wheel and made good use of the slipstream. I came out of it and secured the victory at the finish line. Of course, this feels absolutely fantastic. This is my very first Tour de France, and it has already been a great experience, but to then take the victory here, that feels amazing."

Meeus going for green jersey in 2024? "That's quite a different story"

The interviewer then asks about the green jersey. After all, Meeus managed to beat this year's green jersey holder on the final day of the Tour. Can Meeus aim for the points jersey in 2024? "Pfoe, that's quite a different story," he replies. "Especially when you see how many points Philipsen was ahead of everyone else participating in the Tour." This year, Meeus finished seventh in the battle for the green jersey and was never really able to contend for that victory.
