This past spring, we’ve seen quite a bit of chaos during races. Who still remembers the Étoile de Bessèges, where half the peloton went home after several cars ended up on the course? There were also plenty of crashes and other bizarre moments caused by organizational failures. You’d expect a race like Liège–Bastogne–Liège to be better organized, but nothing could be further from the truth. With about 100 kilometers to go, just before the real climbing phase was set to begin,
a car suddenly appeared on the course. The breakaway riders must have been stunned, because it wasn’t the jury car that normally leads the front of the race. Fortunately, the driver stayed calm and found a safe place to pull over. In the end, everything turned out fine.

But even before the broadcast of La Doyenne had started, things almost went wrong again. The race was
still in the early phase, with a high pace as riders launched attacks trying to form a breakaway. Suddenly, a car came driving toward them. The situation later in the day was much less dangerous, but this moment could have gone very badly.
Felix Grossschartner (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) spotted the car and frantically gestured toward the peloton: the riders managed to maneuver around the vehicle, but it was far from an ideal situation.

Amateur cyclist joins women's race
Amateur cyclist rides along with the women's race
Later in the day, the women fortunately didn’t have to deal with rogue cars, but they did encounter another reckless individual. While Pauliena Rooijakkers was trying to make a difference in the finale,
an amateur cyclist wearing a UAE jersey decided to ride onto the course and latch onto the riders’ wheels. He even pulled up alongside the leaders before a race official on a motorbike pushed him off the road. It may not have been extremely dangerous, but it was certainly disrespectful.
