Gianni Moscon left Soudal Quick-Step this winter after only one year. He transferred to one of their rivals, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, where he will support Primoz Roglic. After all, the 30-year-old Italian had the necessary experience by now, and the Germans were keen to bring that in.
"I experienced in 2024 the thrills I have been looking for for a while," Moscon explained to Bici.Pro. "I rode beautiful races, and the season was positive. Because of that, at the end of the Tour de France, I got a call from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. They explained their project to me and indicated they were looking for someone like me with experience."

Moscon did not think long and immediately asked where he could sign. "I accepted the team's proposal almost immediately. My role in the first half of the season will mainly be to bring the necessary experience to the team and support the leaders in the major stage races. The main goal is to share my experience with the team, and we'll see the rest. Also, because I'm one of the oldest riders on the team."
At Sky, Moscon gained the necessary experience of what it means to ride in a GC team. He wants to use that experience now, which he can offer the team. "Exactly that: provide the right support for the ambitions of leaders such as Roglic, Hindley, and Martinez. Many young, strong riders are here, but experience is lacking, and I feel I am in the right place. I have also learned much over the years because of my age."

In addition, he sees many comparisons between the former Sky and Red Bull. In terms of energy and financial resources, they go all the way. Good is never good enough. In addition, Moscon has a clear role, something that was sometimes lacking before. "Personally, I have always known which path to follow, but without the right context, it is difficult to get that support. Soudal Quick-Step is a big team, and the riders have everything they need. Here, I see that there is a lot more staff than other teams, which comes from a higher budget and the team's guidelines. Now I feel I have a specific role and that I don't have to do three things at the same time."
Moscon does not see the success of his life in Roubaix in 2021 happening any time soon. "With experience and course insight, I might still be able to achieve something in certain races, but it's difficult for the Tour of Flanders or Roubaix. Also, on the hills, it's about watts per kilo, and if you don't have the legs, there's little you can do."
Moscon begins his season in Valencia. "After that, I go to altitude training camps to prepare for the first classics of the season. I will ride the Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico and the Sanremo. From there, we will evaluate with the team whether I will be more useful for the Giro or the Tour de France," said the experienced Italian.
