The Tour of the Algarve is one of the most popular preparatory races of the year. The five-day race in southern Portugal attracts numerous classic men and tour riders, including Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert, and Primoz Roglic on the starting list. IDLProCycling.com provides you with a list of the contenders.
Visma | Lease a Bike will send their top riders to the stage race, who will also receive support from Tiesj Benoot, Sepp Kuss, and Wilco Kelderman, among others. "It proved to be the perfect preparation for the Flemish opening weekend. I came third in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and won Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. So we thought it was a good idea to add the Volta ao Algarve to my program again," Van Aert said.
"There are a few stages where I see opportunities to aim for victory, although the main thing is to take the next step in my preparation for the big spring classics. We will certainly be aiming for the overall victory with Jonas as well. I'm looking forward to my first races on the road," said the Belgian.
The Tour of the Algarve features five stages. Three offer opportunities for fast men, while the stage to Foia is usually for punchers or climbers. For the first time, the tour will conclude with an individual time trial to Malhao, where, in recent years, the race has been decided at the normal stage. In addition to Van Aert and Vingegaard, the Portuguese race organization also announced Roglic, Filippo Ganna, Julian Alaphilippe, and Joao Almeida.
