The Amstel Gold Race was fantastic for both women and men, with two surprising winners. Mischa Bredewold and Mattias Skjelmose were crowned queen and king of Limburg. Afterward, on the podium, the obligatory beer from sponsor Amstel was part of the celebration. Seeing who can down the beer the fastest every year is fun. Many amateur cyclists know better than anyone: after a grueling bike ride, there is little better than a nice cold beer. Relaxing on the terrace in the sun and enjoying a drink with your friends is not much better than that. When Skjelmose,
Tadej Pogacar, and
Remco Evenepoel appeared on the podium, they must have thought that it wasn't the best place to drink a glass of beer. You could see it on their faces; they didn't feel like drinking it ad fundum.
Skjelmose and Evenepoel posed briefly with their glasses before swiftly putting them down again. Perhaps the team does not allow this, but we know that Evenepoel pays attention to every detail: a beer is probably not good for recovery, whether it's alcohol-free or not. Pogacar did take a sip and later started the quest to empty the glass in one go. He succeeded, albeit with some difficulty.
Pieterse and Bredewold drink their glass ad fundum
The podium finishers of the
women's race had much less trouble with it. There were three satisfied riders on the podium and three women who weren't opposed to a beer. Ellen van Dijk had to take a breather but quickly drank the drink anyway. But Bredewold and
Puck Pieterse drank it ad fundum. The latter was particularly quick: within a few seconds, only a little foam remained. It wasn't the first time: after her first mountain bike victory, she drank
the entire bottle of champagne in one go.
