The Australian National Championships are held roughly a week before the Tour Down Under, the WorldTour opener of the 2025 cycling year. It was the first time the trial had been held in Perth on Thursday. Among the women, Brodie Chapman became the successor to retired Olympic and world champion Grace Brown, while Luke Plapp prolonged his title, securing his third national time trial jersey.

The 33-year-old Chapman, who rides for UAE Team ADQ, was by far the fastest in the absence of legend Brown. Last year, she finished second at the national championships by seven seconds, so she was the logical successor. Amber Pate (Liv AlUla Jayco) was runner-up at 32 seconds, while 24-year-old Anya Louw (AG Insurance-Soudal Team) was third at one minute from the winner.

Among the men, the competition was intense, with Plapp emerging as a favorite. The 24-year-old rider from Jayco-AlUla, with his eyes set on the prize, prolonged his title, securing his third-time trial title overall. His determination and drive were evident as he overcame the challenges to secure his victory. It is now six national titles for the young Australian, who has also been champion on the road three times. Jay Vine offered fierce competition: the UAE Team Emirates rider was runner-up by eight seconds. Kelland O'Brien (Jayco-AlUla) completed the podium at 54 seconds. His teammate Luke Durbridge recorded a fast time along the way, but there was a DNF behind his name in the end. What happened is still unclear.

Plapp wants to start 'Down Under' as national champion

So, this is a good warm-up for Plapp for the Tour Down Under. He will start as one of his team's leaders in his home race. Earlier, he said he would like to start in the national jersey. Since no time trial is included in the course, Plapp must also win the road race to make that dream come true. That is scheduled for Sunday, with a 177-kilometer course around Perth.
