He is a charismatic figure in cycling: Alex Carera. The agent, currently representing Tadej Pogacar and previously working for Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome, is more than happy to analyze the successes of his clients. This time, he highlighted an interesting aspect in his discussion: the role of fathers in cycling. Pogacar, Nibali and Froome. Together, they accumulated fifteen grand tour victories, including eight wins in the Tour de France. Today, Carera is mainly involved in Pogacar’s successes with UAE Team Emirates. The Italian was one of the first to be involved in the professional career of the
immensely successful Slovenian. "He was a calm and quiet person, but even at 18 years old, his ideas about what he wanted to achieve were crystal clear: he aimed for the top," Carera told Dutch outlet
Wielrrevue.

Carera not surprised by Pogacar's immense success: "Mainly learned from mistakes"
"I wasn’t really surprised by his fantastic season," Carera continued his account. "I saw an incredibly motivated young man in daily life. Someone who followed the nutrition plan to the letter, enjoyed working with his new trainer, and had the right mindset. Also important: he learned from mistakes made in previous years. And he didn’t have any bad luck in 2024."
Does the Italian agent see parallels between the greatest riders he has guided? Absolutely. "What stands out is that champions have a similar mentality. The defining characteristic of a champion is that after a race, whether they win or lose, they are already focusing on the next goal," he described, noting a somewhat stoic attitude before adding a surprising insight.
A father who is not overly involved makes riders more determined, independent and free, Carera believes. "A second characteristic of riders like Pogacar, Nibali and Froome is that their fathers are not too involved in their careers. They closely follow their sons but let them do what they need to do."
