Matej Mohoric faced a major setback just ahead of two important events. The Slovenian rider from Bahrain Victorious is set to compete in the UCI Road World Championships in Zurich, followed by the Gravel World Championships a week later, where he will defend his title. However, a crash cast doubt on his ability to participate. "Unfortunately, Matej had a tough crash during the recon of the course of the UCI Gravel World Series Sea Otter Europe Girona," his team announced via a post on
X. This event was meant to be his final preparation for the Gravel World Championships, scheduled for October 6 in Leuven, Belgium. Mohoric’s injuries were serious enough that he had to skip the final gravel race.
"Due to his injuries, he won’t be able to race on Saturday. He’ll return home to recover and focus on the upcoming Gravel World Championships," the Bahraini team reported. Mohoric won that same Gravel World Championship last year, beating Florian Vermeersch (second), Connor Swift (third) and Wout van Aert (eighth).

Could Pogacar be down a helper at the Road World Championships? Slovenian media provides a relieving update
Initially, there was some uncertainty about whether the crash would affect his participation in the road race at the World Championships. The former Milan-San Remo winner had been selected by the Slovenian federation to support team leader Tadej Pogacar in the road race, scheduled for September 29 (a week before the Gravel World Championships). Pogacar will also be supported by Primoz Roglic, Jan Tratnik, Luka Mezgec, Domen Novak and Matevz Govekar.
Later in the morning, Slovenian outlet
24ur provided a reassuring update on Mohoric. "According to the latest information from the scene, he was fortunate that the injury was only a serious abrasion to the palm, which has already been treated by medical personnel." Witnesses initially feared worse injuries, but soon after, smiles returned to the Bahrain Victorious team. Mohoric received a few stitches and will "definitely participate in both the Road World Championships in Zurich and the Gravel World Championships in Leuven."
This isn't the first setback for Mohoric this season. Last year, he won six races, but this year, crashes and injuries have kept him from making a major impact. He didn’t shine in the spring classics or the Tour de France. However, earlier in the season, he did win a stage at the Tour of Valencia and dominated the time trial at the Slovenian Championships.
