Relief in Denmark; Skjelmose crash in Tour of Luxembourg does not jeopardize World Championship participation

Some unfortunate news from Luxembourg Wednesday afternoon was that Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) had dropped out after a crash in the second stage of the Tour of Luxembourg. With that, the stage race lost one of the favorites for the overall victory. Fortunately for the Dane, the World Championship is not in jeopardy.

According to the team, it was said to be a crash in the first 20 kilometers, Lidl-Trek announced through a post on X. "Skjelmose spoke of wounds that prevented him from riding any further, and so he was forced to give up," it sounded. That was a disaster not only for the German-American formation but surely also for Denmark, for whom Skjelmose is selected for the upcoming World Championship.

"No sign of serious injury," meaning Skjelmose, who is having an outstanding 2024, will be appearing at the World Championship as normal

During the afternoon, Het Nieuwsblad gave an update on Skjelmose's injuries. "The Dane suffered wounds to the elbow, hip, and knee and was a bit dizzy after his fall. But the team doctor indicated no serious injury," it sounded. Thus, as usual, Skjelmose can appear at the start of the World Championship in Zurich on Sunday, Sept. 29.

2024 has so far been an excellent year for the 23-year-old Dane. The Lidl-Trek rider showed several times that he is on the level of the other world's top riders, including fifth place in the Vuelta a España and fourth place in Paris-Nice. In the process, he even won a stage in that French stage race and was awarded best rider in the youth classification of the Vuelta a España in Madrid.
