Remco Evenepoel posted his first sporting activity on Strava since his bad crash in early December. A little over a month after crashing into a van door in Belgium and breaking several bones, the Belgian of Soudal Quick-Step took a brisk walk in Spain.

Evenepoel went for a 15-kilometer hike in southern Spain, but he says he added another 1.3 kilometers due to a GPS error. And it wasn't just a flat walk, as the Belgian also managed to climb 341 meters in elevation. In Spain, Evenepoel is currently enjoying a vacation with his wife, Oumi, while recovering from his injuries: a broken rib, shoulder blade, hand, pulmonary contusion, dislocated collarbone, and torn ligaments in the shoulder.

Evenepoel aims to return stronger from injury

Last week, on the last day of 2024, Evenepoel looked back on his year. "2024... What a year! A very special one, one where childhood dreams became reality. Thank you to my wife, family, team, and especially my fans for the unconditional support throughout the year. 2025 will start with an injury, but I am determined to return stronger next year."

Before New Year, he looked ahead more specifically in an interview with DH: "The idea is to resume in the Brabantse Pijl and then ride the hilly classics to win," it sounds promising. "It's slowly improving; daily, I feel minor improvements. Sometimes, I still feel some pain in my shoulder. That means the injury is still healing and serious, after all. At home, I wear increasingly fewer slings to support my arm. When I go outside, I still wear it to avoid any wrong movement or contact."

On January 9, Evenepoel has to go to the hospital, and progress will be monitored. "I hope I will get the green light to start riding on the rollers, combined with power sessions with the physio." If allowed, he can start focusing on the climbing classics in April. "That will also be necessary to get a rhythm for the Tour," he says. The Giro d'Italia in May seems out of the question. "I can't help but accept it as it is. It will be a special year, but I must look ahead and adjust to the circumstances."
