Lennard Kämna was involved in a traffic accident during training in Tenerife on Wednesday, reports BORA-hansgrohe. The German team, in a brief statement, could not provide much detail, other than the fact that the 27-year-old rider was taken to the hospital for examination. The news about Kämna emerged just minutes after the finish of the third stage in the Tour of the Basque Country, where race leader Primoz Roglic also crashed hard.
Roglic managed to finish the stage, albeit with considerable injuries to his right side. According to an update posted by the German WorldTour team on X, early medical evaluations showed the GC contender had suffered superficial injuries on his right side, along with bruises and contusions. Thankfully, a concussion was ruled out after an on-the-spot assessment. A more thorough follow-up is slated to happen soon at the hotel.
Kämna, who was set to lead in the Giro d'Italia, underwent further examination in the hospital. "Lennard is okay, he can move everything. But there was a significant impact. Fortunately, he is not in life-threatening condition," BORA-hansgrohe director Ralph Denk told BILD. "The accident apparently wasn't his fault. He collided with a car. According to my information, it happened while turning. More information will follow on Thursday, after discussions with the police about both Kämna's health status and the circumstances of the accident."
Damage is minor for UAE Boys Ayuso and McNulty
In the same race, but during a different crash, UAE Team Emirates' top talent Juan Ayuso was the main victim. Fortunately, the Spaniard managed to finish the stage, though he appeared significantly battered. Further examination revealed that the damage was fortunately minimal for the Catalan. "Just some superficial abrasions on his left arm and bruises on his hip. No other significant injuries and no concussion," stated his team in a communiqué directed at the cycling press.
UAE rider Brandon McNulty also took a fall in the Basque Country. But, like Ayuso, the damage for the American seemed minor. "Only superficial abrasions," reported the team in the same message.
