His current teammates at UAE Team Emirates–XRG, however, clearly don’t share that talent…
On day 1 of the Tour of the Basque Country, the time trial kicked off in the basketball arena of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The day before, during the team presentation, riders were handed a few basketballs and invited to take a shot. João Almeida, Igor Arrieta, Vegard Stake Laengen, Isaac Del Toro, Felix Grossschartner, Brandon McNulty, and Marc Soler all gave it their best effort—but let’s just say the NBA won’t be calling anytime soon.

Pogacar nailed it right away in the Tour
While Pogacar landed a perfect three-pointer on his first attempt during the 2023 Tour de France, the basketballs thrown by the seven UAE riders in the Basque Country sometimes missed the hoop by several meters. After dozens of failed attempts, Marc Soler decided to walk up to the basket and finally tossed one in from directly underneath—though even that took him two tries...
Maybe time for a few lessons or better yet, stick to cycling. On that front, UAE is off to an excellent start in 2025. The team has already claimed 24 victories this season and, with Almeida and Del Toro, has a strong shot at winning the overall in the Basque Country this week.

- I am not sure if it is the hardest to win. In Flanders and Roubaix well before the finish the Peleton will be decimated and the race will normally be won by the best rider of the day or maybe 2nd or 3rd in case of a mechanical or unlucky break especially in case of Roubaix. In San Remo just before the finish there will still be several riders in contention and they are hard to ditch. For the best riders it is a race hard to win since it is not so selective. But if you are not a top 5 rider but still a top 10 rider this race is your best change to win.
