While some of his rivals are preparing for Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in Belgium, and Tadej Pogacar has just dominated the UAE Tour, Mathieu van der Poel is still training in Spain. However, the Dutchman is far from idle, as footage from the Iberian Peninsula has revealed. On Monday, he helped his teammate Sam Gaze secure a coveted Strava KOM with a well-executed lead-out.
Van der Poel and Gaze tackled the Tarbena climb, with the Dutchman setting the pace for his New Zealand teammate. The effort paid off, as Gaze shattered Filippo Gannaās previous best time by 16 seconds. The five-kilometer climb, averaging 5.6%, was completed in 9 minutes and 54 seconds, compared to Gannaās 10:10.
By the way, the third time on that Tarbena climb belongs to Remco Evenepoel, who clocked 11:11. Other names in the top ten include Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Toms Skujins (Lidl-Trek), and Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick-Step), a teammate of Evenepoel.

Sam Gaze, primarily a mountain biker, expressed his gratitude to Mathieu van der Poel on Strava for the lead-out. The Dutchman announced his road racing schedule about a week and a half ago, which will kick off with Tirreno-Adriatico. After that, he will focus on Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, and Paris-Roubaix, before switching to mountain biking and the Tour de France for the rest of the summer.
For now, he continues his preparations in Spain, where the sun appears to be shining brightly, as he trains for the upcoming races. During Opening Weekend, Alpecin-Deceuninck will be relying on Jasper Philipsen, Kaden Groves, and Gianni Vermeersch.
