Rigoberto Urán is retiring from cycling after this season, and that means the immensely popular Colombian has already ridden his last race. This didn’t stop him from having a magnificent farewell. In Colombia, no cyclist holds more fame than Urán, thanks to his remarkable story and his cheerful personality. During his farewell ride, more than ten thousand fans rode alongside him in the annual Gran Fondo of the former GC contender.
The footage circulating online this past weekend of Urán’s farewell speaks volumes. Fans lined up in thick rows waiting for an autograph, while the photo of the participants in the final Giro di Rigo is perhaps even more impressive. A massive tunnel of people stretches from start to finish and far beyond, filled with participants in the last edition of the annual ride. Check out the footage below that appeared on Instagram!
Urán gained his popularity primarily through his impressive life story. As a child, he grew up in extreme poverty and witnessed the murder of his father on the street. He survived by selling lottery tickets on the streets and eventually found his salvation in cycling. His positive attitude and smile made him a highly beloved rider both nationally and internationally.
