Uijtdebroeks knows he needs to start using his rearview mirror in this Giro d'Italia

Cian Uijtdebroeks managed to reclaim the white jersey as the best young rider of this Giro d'Italia on Saturday, after a day without major weather issues. The Belgian riding for Visma | Lease a Bike climbed up Prati di Tivo with the best and, as a result, he took back the jersey from Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla), who had fallen behind. Uijtdebroeks also moved up from seventh to fifth in the general classification.

Plapp had already indicated in the morning that he would no longer wear the white jersey after the stage. "But you never know for sure," Uijtdebroeks said with his characteristic smile in the flash interview. "He told me during the ride that this climb would be really hard for him, and I also knew he wasn't the guy to go for the GC for three weeks."

"Not that I was thinking about it too much," Uijtdebroeks assured. "I was just focused on finishing as high as possible in the GC and not on the jersey, but it's nice to have it back."

Uijtdebroeks is keeping an eye on Tiberi and gets confidence boost thanks to Prati di Tivo

The team leader of the Dutch team meanwhile has to start looking in his rearview mirror, as Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) and Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers) are not far behind. Tiberi even attacked several times in Saturday's stage. "I knew he would probably try, but those attempts were neutralized. Attacking by myself was also pointless, as it was still a fast climb, and also with INEOS and UAE still having guys there, I knew they would go for the sprint, so I went for that too."

The fact that Tadej Pogacar won out of that group surprised no one. "You never know for sure. He is just very strong at the moment and takes every chance he can get."

Later in the evening, Uijtdebroeks further commented on Saturday's race. The outcome at Prati di Tivo simply gives him a lot of confidence, he says on the team site. "We've already had some tough days, but it's going satisfactorily for me. We had another good battle today as well. It obviously gives me a lot of confidence that I recapture the white jersey and also move up two places in the GC. We can move forward with that again."
