With only 25 riders abandoning the race, it was not a Giro d'Italia marked by numerous crashes, but as in every race, several riders had to leave the competition battered and bruised following nasty tumbles. Among them were Andrea Pasqualon (Bahrain Victorious) and Juri Hollmann (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who suffered injuries and came with updates on their condition during the final weekend of the Giro. Hollmann
crashed, as did Jai Hindley (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) on the way to Naples, where dozens of riders went down on the slippery roads. The German rider from
Alpecin-Deceuninck was unable to continue. "He has been diagnosed with a double fracture of the right forearm and a complicated fracture of the right hip."
"Juri is being airlifted to the UZA hospital in Antwerp, where he will undergo further treatment and orthopedic surgery. The entire team wishes Juri a speedy and full recovery," Alpecin-Deceuninck announced immediately after the crash.
Two weeks later, he was still in Belgium. "Following his earlier surgery on his forearm, Juri also underwent surgery on his pelvis last Thursday. Given the circumstances, he is doing well. His progress is being closely monitored, and he will remain in the hospital for a few more days before he can go home. His family is with him."
"I am overwhelmed by all the reactions I have received,"
said Hollmann. "I have read them all but cannot respond to them yet due to my injuries. But I will do that later. I would also like to thank my family and team for all their support over the past few weeks."

Pasqualon undergoes surgery in Siena
Pasqualon crashed in the gravel stage, finishing in Siena, where he had to undergo immediate surgery for a fractured vertebra. "Many will have thought it was bad luck, but I was thinking about how lucky I have been, how much life gives me every day and takes away again. But there was still a glimmer of hope, a smile that kept me alive, thanks to someone up there who decided that it wasn't time to end it yet, but perhaps to write another rich and emotional chapter in those stories that one day can be told and remembered as a fairy tale with a happy end."
"First of all, I want to thank my parents, who were there day and night to support me throughout this surgery. A team specializing in spinal surgery led by neurosurgeon Francesco Muzii, a fantastic person and unique professional, performed this procedure,’ said the Italian. ‘I would also like to thank the team for their support and, of course, my supporters."
