Van Aert sighs deeply in the Tour de France: "My legs... two concrete blocks"

Wout van Aert entered this Tour de France with some uncertainties following his crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen, and logically, he has not fully turned the tide yet. The Belgian did not sprint in the eighth stage won by Biniam Girmay and complained afterward to his wife about the condition of his legs."

The eighth stage should have suited the strong Belgian very well on paper, with an uphill final kilometer. Nevertheless, we saw Van Aert take resolute charge around fifteen kilometers from the finish in support of team leader Jonas Vingegaard, only to drop back without contending for the stage win in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises.

Ultimately, he finished 132nd, losing ground. Afterward, he complained to his wife about his current form. "It's just my legs... like two concrete blocks," VTM reported him saying. It's not a comforting thought heading into Sunday's gravel stage, usually one of his best opportunities for a stage win.

Van Aert has been riding with less-than-optimal legs for several days now

One day earlier, things didn't go smoothly either in the time trial for the Belgian from Visma | Lease a Bike, who already stated that the feeling wasn't what it should normally be. "Unfortunately, I'm not as consistent as I usually am, but there have also been good days in this Tour. We just have to keep our spirits up," he said at the time.

"The consistency I used to have seems to be a bit lost. Maybe that's also logical, considering how hard I crashed in March. Nevertheless, I remain very motivated," Van Aert reminded himself at the time. "I expect that the best legs will come later. I'm also convinced of that. I'll have to take it day by day."
