Mathieu van der Poel has been confirmed by Alpecin-Deceuninck for E3 Saxo Classic. The Dutch team leader had already been expected, just like Wout van Aert of Visma | Lease a Bike. With Tadej Pogacar opting out (to focus on Paris-Roubaix), Van der Poel's participation—fresh off his Milan-San Remo victory—is now officially set. Like last year, Van der Poel is riding almost exclusively the major classics this spring, and the E3 Saxo Classic is certainly one of them. Last season, he launched a solo attack—still wearing the rainbow jersey—and took the win. A year earlier, he was narrowly beaten in the sprint by Van Aert. With Van Aert returning from altitude training, it promises to be an exciting rematch between the two. On Friday, Van der Poel will be supported by Silvan Dillier, Xandro Meurisse, Tobias Bayer, Oscar Riesebeek, Gianni Vermeersch, and Juri Hollmann. The latter crashed on Wednesday during Classic Brugge-De Panne, but is apparently recovered enough to ride the E3. Jasper Philipsen is not on the roster—he'll race Gent-Wevelgem on Sunday, where Van der Poel will not be starting." target="_self">the E3 Saxo Classic.
