Australian gravel rider Freddy Ovett has reached another career milestone. After riding with Specialized for four years, he is now switching to Canyon. This is a great new chapter for Ovett, who often trains with Van der Poel. The Dutch rider approved the transfer and shared it on his own Instagram.
The announcement of the 'transfer' came via a video Ovett shared Saturday on his Instagram account, where he has more than 100,000 followers. "Some things are just meant to be," Ovett wrote in the video's caption.
Van der Poel, world cyclo-cross champion and the face of Canyon for years, enthusiastically welcomed his training partner. "Welcome to the Canyon family, friend," he wrote in his Instagram story in response to the news. He also responded to Ovett with a gif of Leonardo DiCaprio.
Ovett also possesses much athletic talent beyond cycling, running an impressive time at the Malaga marathon in December. The Australian completed the 42 kilometers and 195 meters in 2:34, which is good for an average of 3 minutes and 39 seconds per kilometer. Ovett possesses good running genes. His father, Steve, won gold in the 800-meter run at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, while he also managed to take bronze in the 1,500 meters at the same Games. During those years, he was also the world record holder in the 1500 meters on several occasions.
The 30-year-old Ovett also gave professional cycling a try. He was a trainee with BMC Racing Team and Israel Cycling Academy. It never came to a breakthrough.
