🇩🇪 #EschbornFrankfurt What a ride! 👏 @maximvangils wins @DerRadklassiker 💪🏆
After an outstanding spring, Maxim Van Gils has finally clinched that much-coveted victory. The Belgian from Lotto-Dstny was the fastest in the sprint of a group of favorites at Eschborn-Frankfurt. In the flash interview, the man from Kempen looked back joyfully on his excellent performance.
"It was my last race of the spring, which was already amazing," the Flemish winner began the conversation. "To then conclude the classic campaign with a win is a dream come true."
In the German one-day race - which often ended in a bunch sprint in the past - there were frequent attacks on the various climbs, resulting in a progressively smaller peloton. "I didn’t necessarily feel great, but the team gave me a lot of confidence by working tirelessly for me," Van Gils said. "On the climbs, they made sure many sprinters were dropped. I'm glad I survived the last two hills and then, somewhat from behind, found enough energy to recover and then sprint. Luckily, I still had enough speed in my legs."
As mentioned, Van Gils had a perfect spring, with top placements in events like Strade Bianche (third), Milan-San Remo (seventh), the Flèche Wallonne (third), Liège-Bastogne-Liège (fourth), and the Famenne Ardenne Classic (third). "It was indeed really crazy. This season, everything went perfectly. I really enjoyed it because I was consistently at a high level. What kind of rider am I exactly? Hard to say, since I win now from a sprint." Van Gils then concludes with a message that he will now take some rest. "I am quite tired. But after that, I will focus on my next major goals, namely the Tour of Switzerland and the Tour de France."
