Jonas Vingegaard finished ninth on Monday - with a new, striking time trial helmet - in the opening time trial of the Tirreno-Adriatico. The Danish top favorite for the Italian race was relatively satisfied with this result, as he later conveyed through the communication channels of Visma | Lease a Bike. Firstly, about the helmet, which Vingegaard, like his teammates, wore in Lido di Camaiore. "We extensively tested the helmet last winter. We did this using prototypes and position scans of different riders, including Jonas and Wout van Aert," explained Head of Performance Mathieu Heijboer.
It didn't immediately result in a victory. Ayuso, already seen as Vingegaard's main challenger, completed the course 22 seconds faster than the two-time Tour winner. However, Vingegaard was not mourning over it. "I am quite satisfied with the time trial I completed. The feeling was definitely good. There are many more stages to come where a lot can happen. I'm really looking forward to that," said the Dane.
Niermann: "Jonas couldn't utilize his strength optimally"
Team director Grischa Niermann added, "We knew the time trial course wouldn't be ideal for Jonas. On a flat and short course like this, he couldn't utilize his strength optimally. In hindsight, a top-ten finish is a fine result. We had factored in a smaller difference with Ayuso beforehand, but Jonas was the second fastest GC rider on the course. He's still in a good position."
Ayuso was also asked for his thoughts on the time difference with Vingegaard after the event, but the Spaniard remained non-committal. "Whether Jonas is still the top favorite? That's not for me to determine, but I am quite sure he will be one of the men to beat in this Tirreno-Adriatico. Looking at myself, I'm pleased with my start in this race. It's going to be a beautiful but tough battle. We will do everything we can to win the race," said the leader of UAE Team Emirates.
