Visma | Lease a Bike has lost its monopoly on the Foodcoach app. In a press release, The Athlete’s FoodCoach announced that the renowned nutrition app, originally developed for the Dutch cycling team, will now also be used by Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe.
The Foodcoach app has been a key tool for Visma | Lease a Bike for years, pioneering a revolutionary approach that allowed riders to precisely track and consume the exact food and drinks they needed. In 2024, the team integrated TrainingPeaks, further fine-tuning nutrition plans based on individual effort and physical condition.
The app was already available to amateur cyclists for a fee, and in 2023, Alpecin-Deceuninck also made strides toward launching a similar nutrition app. Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe’s adoption of the app isn’t entirely surprising, but it will likely sting for Visma | Lease a Bike, as the concept was originally developed by Asker Jeukendrup, a former key figure at Visma who has since joined Red Bull.

Jeukendrup now serves as Director of Sports Strategy at Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe and possesses extensive knowledge of the Foodcoach app. During the winter, riders and staff of the team received training on the app’s usage at a camp in Mallorca. "We are honored to introduce this approach to Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. We look forward to developing The Athlete's FoodCoach further together and expanding this method to other sports and future Red Bull projects," said Robert Jan Koens, director of The Athlete’s FoodCoach.
Jeukendrup emphasizes that the Foodcoach app provides the team with essential tools to elevate nutrition to the next level — a critical factor for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, which, with Red Bull as a major financial backer, aims to reach the very top of professional cycling. "Nutrition has become a crucial factor in elite sports — not just for performance, but also for recovery. Small, consistent choices in daily meals lead to big results."
