Matteo Jorgenson made great progress last year on behalf of Visma | Lease a Bike. In his first year with the Dutch team, the American won Paris-Nice and Dwars door Vlaanderen. He impressed throughout the season with his appearance on and off the bike. Jorgenson, who came from Movistar, states that he had to undergo profound changes after signing for Visma | Lease a Bike.

The American told the Italian cycling magazine Alvento how that worked out. "When I signed with Visma | Lease a Bike in the summer, they sent me to their biomechanist in Bilbao. He showed me a video of how I cycled in the Tour de France and added: The way you rotate the pedals, you are one of the least efficient in the peloton."

Jorgenson, who also won the Tour of Oman with Movistar and competed in such races as the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Nice, Tour de Romandie, and Tour de France, was thus forced to deal with the facts at the Dutch team. "The guy told me we could improve, but I needed to invest."

Jorgenson could activate other muscles through 'new' way of cycling at Visma | Lease a Bike

"I had to want it because it would be a tough and nerve-wracking process," Jorgenson recalls. "I had to forget my muscle memory or break that pattern. If I could do that, I could make great progress."

So, how exactly was that? "Certain muscles I would activate, having cycled a certain way for eighteen years. So which ultimately turned out not to be the correct way at all," said the number eight of the latest Tour de France.
