Vos just misses out on staying with the Kopecky/Vollering group: "In hindsight, we might have done things differently"

She did it again: although Marianne Vos was clearly not among the top riders at the women's elite World Championships, she still managed to put herself in a promising position. Ultimately, she couldn’t keep up in the final lap — partly due to Demi Vollering’s attacks — though she admitted right after the finish that some tactical choices could have been different.

Riejanne Markus broke away with Belgium’s Justine Ghekiere, and Vos cleverly bridged the gap with Ruby Roseman-Gannon. At one point, the four of them gained a minute’s lead at the start of the final lap, which seemed like the perfect execution of a well-planned strategy by the Dutch team.

"We knew that things would explode from behind, so up to a certain point, it was a good situation," Vos agreed with the Dutch-speaking press. "If you’re up front and can put pressure from behind, that could work well for Demi."

Vos: "We are also disappointed"

Eventually, Vollering closed the gap with a few other riders and launched her attacks. These efforts cost Vos her position, and Elisa Longo Borghini delivered the final blow with her own attack. Vos couldn’t close the gap, while Vollering finished in fifth place.

"Well, that’s part of the game, of course," Vos concluded. "We are also disappointed, and we didn’t come here to miss the podium — that’s clear. I think we did everything we could, but in hindsight, we might have done things differently. That’s for sure."

Vos holds no grudge against her teammate, as she pointed out. "I didn’t have much left, so in that sense... When Demi goes for it and they get away, then it’s fingers crossed that it works out. Afterward, you evaluate and think about how you might have done things differently here and there. Demi didn’t know I was coming, I’m sure of that," Vos concluded.
