The first 'super' World Cycling Championships in Glasgow have only just begun, but UCI President David Lappartient has already revealed quite a bit about the next edition of the mass event to IDLProCycling.com, he wants to go even bigger in the French region of Haute-Savoie in 2027.
In Glasgow, we will see thirteen cycling disciplines, but if Lappartient has his way, this will be nineteen or even twenty in 2027. On the list to be added are eSports, pumptrack, enduro, polobike, gravel and track for juniors. In particular, gravel is a discipline that has gained popularity among the general public in recent years: at the first World Championships last year in Veneto, both Mathieu van der Poel (as a competitor) and Tadej Pogacar (as a spectator) were present.
"Cyclocross continues to be absent from the 'super' World Cycling Championships' roster in 2027," Lappartient informed this website. "Cyclocross wasn't featured in Glasgow and it won't be included in Haute-Savoie either. The event just doesn't align with the cyclocross timetable, given it's primarily a winter sport," articulated the UCI's French president.

Climbers will have their turn at the 'super' World Championships 2027

Lappartient did not want to disclose much about the road course in Haute-Savoie, but in Glasgow, he revealed that it will take place in Sallanches. He promised a course that mirrors those of 1980 and 1964, which were conquered solo by Bernard Hinault and Jan Janssen respectively. "The course will favor climbers and general classification riders, while sprinters might as well stay at home. Their opportunity will come a year later in Abu Dhabi," he noted. On Thursday, Lappartient and his team made public their decision to host the 2028 World Championships in the aforementioned city in the United Arab Emirates.
With these new disciplines, it is expected that the 'super' World Championships of 2027 will last longer than in Glasgow this year. Lappartient mentions three weekends, but adds that this still needs to be confirmed.
On Friday, you can read an extensive piece with David Lappartient on our website, in which he also discusses the choices that Mathieu van der Poel, Tom Pidcock, and Filippo Ganna must make.
