A tragic road accident occurred in Trentino on Friday in which a young cyclist was killed, Tuttobiciweb reported. The accident occurred on a secondary road between Mezzocorona and Mezzolombardo, where 19-year-old Sara Piffer was hit by a car during a training ride. Her brother Christian, who was also riding his bike, suffered minor injuries.
According to initial investigation results, the young cyclist was hit by a car driven by a 70-year-old man from the region. The driver reportedly overtook another vehicle and collided head-on with the cyclist. Emergency services, including a trauma helicopter, were quickly on the scene, and medical teams immediately began life-saving procedures, but the injuries sustained proved fatal.
Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances of the accident. The local and cycling communities are shocked at the loss of the young athlete.
Sara Piffer, from the village of Paiù di Giovo, was a talented cyclist who competed in both road and track. In 2021, she finished second at the Italian Madison Championships. This year, as in 2024, the rider would race for Team Mendelspeck, an Italian continental team. Last year, the Italian was still at the start of the Strade Bianche Donne and the Trofeo Alfredo Binda.
