Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado won the Jaarmarktcross in Niel. The Dutch rider was the best from start to finish, and she clearly showed this in a tough mud race. Cyclo-cross on a Monday? Sure. On the day of the annual commemoration of the armistice in World War I on November 11, 1918, there is always a cyclo-cross race on this date, even on a Monday. Fem van Empel was not present after the European Championship, but with Alvarado and Brand, we had the other two Dutch top riders at the start.
After Brand had claimed victory in Lokeren on Sunday after an extended solo, Alvarado turned the tables one day later. The Fenix-Deceuninck rider was simply the strongest and thus quickly went solo. The gap between Brand and
Inge van der Heijden grew with each lap. After three of the five laps, it was already 25 seconds.
That Brand was not having her best day was apparent when she received company in the last two laps from the strong
Sara Casasola. Van der Heijden had disappeared from the forefront, but the Italian again became a constant factor for the podium places. In the final lap, she even put Brand under pressure, with Marion Norbert-Riberolle dangerously closing in.
So it was an excellent battle for second place, more than half a minute behind the impressive winner, Alvarado. By running better in the deep mud puddles, Brand secured second place. Behind her, Casasola seemed to be going for place three, but she didn't realize that Norbert-Riberolle had joined her. The Belgian sprinted joyfully to bronze.
