On Monday night, Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Corendon) won a spectacular edition of the Superprestige in Diegem. Without Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert at the start, it was up to the others who turned the race into one of this winter's most exciting cyclo-cross races. It was thrilling Until the last meters, but Thibau Nys was ultimately defeated.

Diegem once again prepared a great show for the visitors. Lucinda Brand won the women's race early in the evening, after which there was also a nice extra with the Turbo Cross. Puck Moonen and Bas Tietema won that race, after which the main event could begin.

The start is one of the most challenging early stages of the year, and the nervousness reflects that. An impressively strong Tibor del Grosso daringly took the lead while Nys was behind, losing momentum and some ground. The Belgian, the top favorite for the well-attended evening race, dropped to eighteen. With some daring moves, however, he quickly advanced to fifth place.

Chaos ensues with a field of competitors all on equal footing

Lars van der Haar and Niels Vandeputte also missed their start, while Kevin Kuhn caused some commotion towards the men from Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal. At the end of the first lap, we made some sort of a summary, with Michael Vanthourenhout, Del Grosso, Sweeck, and Felipe Orts on the front row. Behind them, Nys moved up while Eli Iserbyt lost spots and dropped back in the pack.

Vanthourenhout did not want to give the competition breathing room, but seven men were still in his tracks after two laps. Later, he still took some distance, forcing Nys into the defense. However, the men from Alpecin-Deceuninck, including Jente Michels, Gianni Vermeersch, Del Grosso, and Vandeputte, lent a hand and closed the gap.

Del Grosso boldly took over and jumped on the bridge to show his superiority, while Vanthourenhout faced shoe problems just like Sunday. His teammate Iserbyt got into a jam after falling on the slant, which resulted in four riders remaining: Del Grosso, Vandeputte, Nys, and Sweeck. The latter, in particular, did a good job for his classification.

Vanthourenhout picked himself up and took a position at the front when things were getting a bit deadlocked, after which the game was back on the table. Nys wanted to take care of some shifting and stepped up the pace again, which Sweeck and Vanthourenhout followed. Vandeputte caught up a little later, but so did the rest. That way, we were back with ten at the head of the race, including Ryan Kamp.

In the following image, Sweeck suddenly rode in front, while Vanthourenhout had to drop out for a second time due to a problem. He eventually abandoned the race. Vandeputte and Nys held on and pursued the Crelan-Corendon rider. Just after entering the final lap, Vandeputte took over, while Nys could return a little later. The rider from Baloise Trek Lions (from January 1, Baloise Glowi Lions) took the lead just before the sand section and then accelerated strongly.

Sweeck countered, forcing Vandeputte to surrender. Towards the final turns, the duel became tough, with a lot of passing. Sweeck went through the last corner first and raced to the finish, defeating Nys.
