Joris Nieuwenhuis was born on February 11, 1996, in Doetinchem in the Netherlands and quickly made a name for himself as a cyclo-cross rider. As a youth, he won the Dutch national title three times and eventually transitioned to the professional ranks as a top talent. In his best season in the U23 category, 2016/2017, he won the World Cup convincingly and also became the U23 world champion in Bieles, Luxembourg. The following year, he was outperformed by Eli Iserbyt.
Like many talented cyclo-cross riders, Nieuwenhuis also proved skilled on the road, which he aimed to showcase with DSM's U23 team. In 2019, he moved to the professional branch of Iwan Spekenbrink’s team after a full winter season in cyclo-cross, where he hadn’t managed any victories at the elite level. In his first year at the top level on the road, he caught attention with a seventh-place finish in the Tour of Norway and a sixth place at the European Games. In the pandemic-affected 2020 season, he was granted a spot in the Tour de France and achieved an impressive third place in Paris-Tours.
From that point onwards, cyclo-cross took a back seat for two years. Nieuwenhuis rode the Tour de France again in 2021 and competed in the Vuelta in 2022, but found he missed the enjoyment and peace he experienced in cyclo-cross. As a result, he decided in October 2022 to join the Baloise Trek Lions cyclocross team, where he was warmly welcomed. In the 2022/2023 winter season, he immediately showed strong performances, finishing second at the Dutch National Championships, fourth at the European Championships and consistently placing in the top five in several A-class cyclo-cross races.
