Mountain bike legend Schurter bows his head: "My best days don't come around very often anymore"

Tom Pidcock triumphed in Monday's Olympic mountain bike title after a daring maneuver over Victor Koretzky on the final lap. A little further on, ten-time (!) world champion Nino Schurter finished in ninth place, likely ending his Olympic career with one title.

Schurter does not silence his thoughts and feelings on Instagram after a disappointing race. "How much I would have liked to go back and perform better. I feel I still have all the qualities to compete for the win, but it wasn't my day. I didn't have the right flow and was constantly chasing," he revealed the day after the race.

"I must accept that my best days are not that frequent anymore," the experienced Swiss continued. "But it was incredibly cool to be part of the Olympics again. The vibe, atmosphere, and support you get from all over the world are unique. I am incredibly grateful for everything I have achieved and all the support I have received," he told us.

Flückiger also fails to finish on the podium

The other Swiss, Mathias Flückiger, finished fifth. He could not follow up his silver medal from Tokyo that way. "This is not what I had hoped for, but I am 98 percent satisfied with my performance and can't blame myself for anything," the second Swiss competitor in this mountain bike race at the Games announced via his socials.

"In 2016, I was sixth, in Tokyo, I got silver, and now I have another Olympic degree, so I'm kind of proud of that," he continued. "Thank you to everyone who supported me towards these Olympics, and thank you for all the encouragement from the crowd and people at home."
