Amy Pieters is making progress in her rehabilitation. Her former team, SD Worx-Protime, announced in a press release that the former cyclist is still working hard to live as independently as possible. Four years after her accident while training in Spain, it is clear that a full recovery is no longer possible.

"Amy Pieters completed her rehabilitation under the Daan Theeuwes Centre some time ago. The Daan Theeuwes Centre has achieved great strides with Amy, and for this, Amy and her family are eternally grateful to them. Here Amy has learned to walk independently again and here she has been taught to live as independently as possible. Within Amy's current capabilities, the limits of both her physical and conscious have been pushed."

"However, Amy will always need care," the message continues. "Her memory is severely impaired and talking is not possible, which hampers her continued development. It proved incredibly difficult to find a place for Amy, based on her specific care. Amy's memory is very short-lived and she is also still limited to speaking and answering a single yes and/or no. Sometimes she does count out loud, and sometimes at a birthday song she can also be heard singing along. Hearing her fine voice makes her loved ones happy. Through speech therapy, Amy does manage, after practice, to repeat a specific letter. This goes better some times than others."

"Her aphasia limits her to communicating more easily. She is unable to write sentences. Fortunately, her facial expressions are still very strong which makes her communication a little easier for those around her. Other than that, Amy can manage quite well. She does need to be guided, but after this she is fairly independent." In August 2023, another update was shared about Pieters' condition, who was struggling especially mentally.

Pieters has a new place to live, conflict with SD Worx resolved

At the Daan Theeuwes Center, Pieters worked hard on her rehabilitation.

Pieters has now found a place where she can live comfortably. "In Amersfoort, a place has now been found that suits Amy best at the moment. She has her own adapted flat here. The speech therapy that Amy was doing so well at the DTC is continued here. Yet it is realised that a much greater recovery will no longer be achieved. In her new flat, however, she has plenty of support, and her neighbors have been wonderful to her. Amy loves playing cards and various other kinds of games. This makes her happy and she really enjoys doing this. She seems to have adapted quite quickly in Amersfoort, as she and her neighbours often play cards or other games together. That this transition seems to have been handled quite smoothly by Amy gives confidence for the future."

!Amy is fortunately still a very cheerful woman. She is sociable and welcoming in her interactions. At times like these, her loved ones see a lot of character traits back from Amy as before her accident. As long as Amy shows improvements, no matter how small, everyone remains sight and hope for the best possible recovery with a brighter future."

"Amy Pieters (through her administrator) and SD Worx-Protime had a business disagreement over the settlement of the contract after Amy suffered a hard fall in 2021 and could no longer be active as a cyclist. This difference of opinion eventually led to court proceedings. Although both parties experienced this as very unpleasant, the personal relationship between Amy and Team SD Worx-Protime never came under pressure. The respect for each other was, and is, great. The parties are therefore pleased to report that an amicable resolution to the dispute has now been reached, allowing the ongoing proceedings to be terminated."
