Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, the Tour of the Basque Country witnessed another dramatic incident just a day after Primoz Roglic’s crash. The Slovenian from BORA-hansgrohe has once again hit the ground hard in the Tour of the Basque Country. Remco Evenepoel - who had to abandon - and Jonas Vingegaard were also involved, with the Dane from Visma | Lease a Bike left badly injured. It was a horror crash, there's no other way to describe it.
A rider from Lidl-Trek lost control and slid, causing part of the peloton to fall in a fast descent. A ditch on the side made the damage even greater, as did the presence of some boulders. Evenepoel walked away holding his collarbone, while Vingegaard was left lying down on his side. "Remco was taken to the hospital by ambulance, and we will come with more information as soon as we have it,' Soudal Quick-Step announced via social media.
Roglic, although managing to get up by himself, was visibly shaken, especially after his Wednesday’s ordeal. The crash also left riders from EF Education-EasyPost (specifically Alexander Cepeda and Markel Beloki), TotalEnergies, and UAE-Team Emirates (Jay Vine) sprawled across the road, battered and bruised, in what resembled a scene from a battlefield.
The aftermath was so severe that the stage had to be temporarily paused due to a shortage of ambulances, which were busy ferrying the injured. The race organizers announced that the stage would resume once medical staff were able to return to the race.
About fifteen minutes post-crash, Vingegaard was transported away with serious injuries, with his teammates, including Milan Vader and Steven Kruijswijk, quickly realizing the gravity of their team leader’s condition.
Here’s hoping for a swift recovery for all involved and for measures to be taken to prevent such frightening incidents in the future.
