The news hit hard on Wednesday afternoon. The NATO summit taking place in the summer of next year requires so much attention that motorcycle police escorts can no longer be used at cycling events as of January 1. That has huge consequences for cycling races in the Netherlands, which now have to find another solution for organizing their events. We are thinking especially of the Amstel Gold Race. Leo van Vliet responds.
The Amstel Gold Race was already at risk earlier this year due to doubts in the Vaals City Council about the organization of the race. Back then, Van Vliet also felt out of control.
Now, he reacts with shock at the announcement about the motorcycles. "That this already is effective from January 1, 2025, is new to us. We are caught off guard by this."

Van Vliet believed he could escape trouble because of the date mentioned
At first, Van Vliet still thought that the Gold Race, in particular, would escape trouble. "We had already heard in recent weeks rumors that the organization of the NATO summit in the Netherlands would make it difficult to get a police escort for cycling races after April in 2025." It now appears that this will happen anyway from January 1. Remarkable because there are seven months in between, and cycling races would be an excellent opportunity to train motorcycle officers correctly.
Van Vliet keeps his spirits up because of the reputation his race has earned. "We will now investigate all options to allow the Amstel Gold Race to continue on the original course. The Amstel Gold Race is the biggest sporting event in the Netherlands and has much international exposure. I think that many people, also at a high level, find it important that the Amstel Gold Race takes place." Story to be continued...
