Thymen Arensman may look back more than satisfied with the opening time trial of the Vuelta a Espana. The Dutchman of INEOS Grenadiers set the 23rd fastest time in Oeiras, finishing fifth amongst the "real" GC riders of this Tour of Spain. So it has started, he concluded in conversation with IDLProCycling.
Arensman is the first to mention that he sometimes has trouble with the first days of a big tour, which he can now cross off. In addition, he is not exactly a fan of the heat, as was evident recently in the time trial at the Tour of Burgos. There, he overheated, but in the Portuguese heat, he kept his head—and body—cool.
So we were right in noticing a satisfied Arensman as he was cooling down after the race. "The wind was a bit frightening here, though. I was happy to stay on the bike and keep my position, but I think that was the case for everyone. It went well, though. We all know I'm never at my best on the first day of a big tour, and a time trial like this is pretty explosive anyway, so I'm content."
"It was a fast course," continued the Dutchman, who thanked bike sponsor Pinarello for the equipment provided. Quality, Arensman judged. "We all have a speedy trial bike, and the setup is fine. We've been doing well in time trials all year, and I think I can give the team credit for that: the material is top-notch."

After a long preparation, the Vuelta circus has begun, which riders are generally relieved about. So was Arensman. "I have to say that days before a big tour are definitely not the most enjoyable. You are a bit nervous anyway, and there is tension to start. And there are obligations, like the media, of course," he winks ad rem.
"That's all part of it," he notes, then takes us back to the Gran Salida in Lisbon. "It's just a nice moment to get off that starting podium. Then you can forget everything and do what you love: ride fast. The Vuelta is on its way now, and that's nice."
A time trial suits Arensman. "I like this a lot. The value ratios may be clear, so the peloton has less stress. Besides, I like to start with a time trial. I'm pretty good at it, and such a ride as in the Giro to start with, I'd rather not have that."
