Even though Alpecin-Deceuninck had much to celebrate on Sunday, Paris-Roubaix was also chaotic for the Dutch team. In the final hour, winner Mathieu van der Poel had a bidon thrown at him and got a flat tire. But Silvan Dillier had even worse luck. The Swiss domestique in Dutch service was involved in a very unfortunate crash.
It happened when a Visma | Lease a Bike rider, Edoardo Affini, needed help from his team. The Italian had a mechanical problem on a cobblestone section and had to change bikes. His mechanic put him back on the bike to give him a push, after which the time trialist continued on his way. The same mechanic then ran to the old bike, which was lying by the side of the road. It had to be put on the car, but that's where things went wrong.
He picked up the bike and ran to the left side of the car, where there was room to put the bike on. However, there was not much room on the narrow strip, and Dillier passed the Visma car at that very moment. The mechanic saw him too late and could not take the broken bicycle away in time. The unfortunate Swiss could no longer avoid it and crashed into the mechanic. He landed on the cobblestones with a loud thud.
