Maxim Van Gils' transfer to Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe caused quite a stir in the cycling world. Some felt the 25-year-old Belgian's approach was less than honorable, arguing that he should have honored his contract instead of forcing an exit. But beyond those involved in the transfer saga, Van Gils has also drawn criticism from others. Amaury Capiot is still far from over the crash caused by his compatriot during the Tour de France.
"I'm still recovering from that crash," Capiot told Sporza. "My sacrum was broken in three places. It's healing well, but I still feel some discomfort when I do squats." The crash happened when the Belgian rider for Arkea-B&B Hotels dropped back in the final moments of the stage, while Van Gils was trying to move up. The two collided, leading to a nasty crash.
Capiot continues to feel the effects of the crash. "After a few hours, my right hamstring starts acting up. But with strengthening exercises and massage, it should turn out fine." He even considered taking legal action against the former Lotto-Soudal rider. "We thought about that together with the team. Because what if I continue to suffer in the coming years as a result of that fall, and it means I don't perform as good? That's something you don't know right after that fall, but you will know in six months. But let's assume that everything will be alright."

There was some contact between the two shortly after the crash, but it was rather cold. "In the first two days after the fall, we exchanged messages. But not much was said in those. No apologies were offered. It's typical of Van Gils as I know him," said Capiot, who, despite his ongoing rehabilitation, has already set goals for the new year. "I want to help the team achieve victories and hope to win one or two races myself. Hopefully, that will earn me a new contract."
