Luis Herrera (64), the first non-European winner of the Vuelta, is accused of being involved in four murders in the fall of 2002. In a Colombian news broadcast, the Colombian is accused of ordering a paramilitary organization to kill four people.
Noticias Uno revealed this shocking news after they managed to identify the perpetrators of the murders, who then told the news channel that Herrera was the one who had convinced them to kill four 'guerrilla fighters.' According to their statements, they were given several envelopes, one containing money and one containing photos of the guerrilla fighters they were supposed to kill.
After the brutal murders, in which the victims had their throats slit, were chopped up, and buried, they discovered that the four men were not guerrilla fighters at all. They were Herrera's neighbors whose land he wanted to acquire. Although Noticias Uno reported that an investigation had been opened, Herrera has not yet responded to the allegations.

The first non-European winner of the Vuelta

Herrera, one of the most successful riders in Colombian cycling history, rode in the peloton in the 1980s and early 1990s. He won the mountain jersey in all three grand tours and, in 1987, became the first non-European to win the Vuelta, the most significant victory of his career.
The Colombian rider really helped put cycling on the map for his country. In addition to the mountain jerseys and the overall victory in the Vuelta, he also won at least one stage in every grand tour and claimed five mountain jerseys. In 1985, he won the polka dot jersey in the Tour de France for the first time when Bernard Hinault won the GC. If the allegations prove true, Herrera seems to have completely shattered his reputation.
