Remco Evenepoel won the Clasica San Sebastián for the third time in his career on Saturday afternoon. This time he didn't win solo, but defeated Bahrain Victorious rider Pello Bilbao in a two-man sprint. Evenepoel showed an attacking approach from 75 kilometers to the finish, giving his triumphant victory an extra glossy touch. "I launched my attack early on and hoped that a few strong guys would join," begins the winner in the flash interview. "That's what happened eventually. We had a super-strong group in the lead," he points out, referring to the presence of Bilbao, Aleksander Vlasov and Alberto Bettiol. "That was a perfect group."
Evenepoel also speaks highly of the collaboration in that 'perfect' group. "We rode together really well. On the Murgil, I increased the pace to a certain speed that I thought I could maintain until the top of the climb. At the summit, I saw that only Pello (Bilbao) was with me. I knew he was fast, so I was actually quite surprised by my final sprint. After all, normally he is one of the fastest climbers in the peloton."
"I still had really good legs in the sprint," he continues jubilantly. "I absolutely love this race. The supporters are amazing, although today they were cheering more for Pello than for me," he says with a wide grin. "But that is of course completely logical. It was great to dive into the final with him. This is a significant boost for both body and mind. I'm heading to the World Championships in Glasgow with confidence."
